Our New Upcoming "Halls of Justice"
During 2011 and 2012 state-of-the-art facilities for our Supreme Court and Magistrates Court will be completed and come into service. This will be a welcome relief to the public, judicial staff, attorneys, and the judiciary. The scale of improvements to the physical facilities of these courts is unprecedented and represents a major plank of the Governments agenda to strengthen the administration of justice.
Supreme Court
The historic Parliament Square and Bank Lane area that has been the seat of our high court for centuries, will be again become the precincts for all the courts comprising the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court, presently scattered across several locations in the City of Nassau, will be returned to completely renovated and new premises at Parliament Square and Bank Lane. New premises will include modern courts constructed in the former Ansbacher House acquired by Government in July 2010 for judicial use. When completed, the entire Parliament Square and Bank Lane precincts will have 14 modern trial rooms, the several registries of the court, modern judges’ chambers, a vault for an Exhibits Store (to safeguard exhibits for trials), jury rooms, robing room for counsel, court library, modern security features including CCTV, an independent standby electrical generator, and attractive exterior landscaping.
Construction works on the Supreme Court project started in July 2010 and is expected to be completed during 2012. As the project is phased, courts will be completed for occupation at different times during the project period, beginning in the second quarter of 2011.
Magistrates’ Court
A modern Magistrates’ Court complex on South Street (near Nassau Street) is expected to be completed in 2011. It will house 12 magistrates’ courts, including juvenile courts. Additionally, the complex will include modern communications system, 7 holding cells, a police station, public areas, a library, a registry, a treasury, court reporter facilities, magistrates’ chambers, and an independent standby electrical generator.
