During the annual medical, the students are screened for a myriad of health concerns. Good oral health is one such concern. It is important because dental problems can impact self esteem for children and progress to problems eating, speaking and attending to learning, among other more serious issues. If a problem is discovered during the routine medical, the student will be referred to a specialty dental clinic.
Recommendations for dental referral:
- Dark staining of the grooves of teeth.
- Large accumulation of plaque with or without white decalcification.
- Dark pits.
- History of discomfort to hot, cold or sweets.
- Cavities.
- Destruction of crowns of teeth.
- Swelling of gums.
- Significant and prolonged mouth pain with or without facial swelling.
- Broken fillings.
Any school child is eligible.
- Principal sends letter informing parents of the medical, prior to the actual date.
- Parents/guardians complete and sign the medical questionnaire prior to the exam.
- Student presents personal medical card to the school health team.
- Student participates in screening by nurses and health aide.
- Student participates in oral examination by the school health doctor.
- Child is referred to a specialty clinic, if necessary.
